Eilish Brightwell, a student living in Camden said: “Living in Camden near the market and passing it every day, I don’t really think about pickpocketing regularly.

“However, considering the number of tourists in the area it doesn’t surprise me that there is a lot of pickpocketing around the market and in the borough in general.”

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police Service said: “We’ve launched a Strengthening Local Policing Programme (SLP) which aims to help tackle crime and disorder more effectively.

“Local policing needs to become more effective and efficient in tackling crime and disorder and be able to deliver a service that is more personal and responsive to the needs of London with fewer resources.

“The MPS has taken the operational decision that the changes be extended across London to meet the challenges posed by planned budget reductions in 2018 and beyond and to deliver the operational benefits more widely.”

The Metropolitan Police Service have reported a total of 33,033 pickpocketing offences over London totalling £16,704,793.98 loss of value.

The spokesperson continues: “The programme will tackle crime and disorder more effectively and helping to make London the safest global city.”
