New crime figures show a 47% increase in burglaries within Birmingham.

Figures released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed an increase of over 700 burglaries to residence or dwellings since 2014.

The total number of burglaries within central Birmingham alone is 5,176 over 3 years.


Postcode ares with the highest numbers of residence or dwelling burglaries include:


  • B13, Moseley and Billesley with a total of 675 burglaries over 3 years.

  • B14 Kings Heath, Yardley Wood, Druids Heath, Highter’s Health and Warstock with a total of 620 burglaries over 3 years.

  • B17 Harbone with a total of 493 burglaries over 3 years.

  • The areas with the least residence or dwelling burglaries burglaries include:

  • B2, Birmingham City Centre, New Street, with a total of 7 burglaries over 3 years.

  • B3, Birmingham City Centre, Newhall Street with a total of 27 burglaries over 3 years.

  • B4, Birmingham City Centre, Corporation Street (north), with a total of 37 burglaries over 3 years.



With burglaries becoming a more common occurrence, a spokesperson from West Midlands Police, advises the public how to keep yourself safe, and how to prevent your homes being burgled.


“Make sure you don’t leave your house or vehicle keys in the lock or even on a side table thief’s can easier see them and try to fish them through your letterbox.

“Try not to leave parcels or deliveries in open porches that could be used to enter your home, for example, curved-handled umbrellas to open doors or keys through letterboxes.


“Always lock your front door from inside, even when you’re in as some burglars won’t care if you’re in.

“When you're away on holiday cancel newspapers and milk.


“Always ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property whilst you're away, and give them a key to go and check everything inside is okay.”
